How to Access Saline County Death Index Records

All Saline County death certificates are held by the Arkansas Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, at 4815 West Markham Street, Slot 44, Little Rock, AR 72205. This is the only office in Arkansas that issues certified death certificate copies. Phone: (501) 661-2174 or toll-free (800) 637-9314. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. For walk-in service, arrive by 3:00 PM for same-day processing.

Arkansas law limits who can get a death certificate. Under Arkansas Statute 20-18-305, records less than 50 years old are restricted. Immediate family members, legal representatives, academic researchers with prior approval, and those with a documented legal right can access restricted records. Records 50 years and older are open to the public. Non-relatives requesting records over 50 years old must request by mail. They cannot order through VitalChek or by phone. Photo ID is required for all requests. If a search comes up empty, the $10.00 search fee is non-refundable.

The Saline County Health Unit at 1615 Edison Avenue, Benton, AR 72015 provides local certificate application assistance. Phone: (501) 778-4131. The health unit accepts completed applications and forwards them to the state Vital Records office. The certificate is then mailed to you. This is a good local option if you are in Benton and want help with the form. The health unit cannot issue certificates on the spot.

Online orders go through VitalChek. The order form takes 5 to 10 minutes. VitalChek charges a $5.00 processing fee and $1.85 for LexisNexis identity verification. The first certificate copy is $10.00. Extra copies of the same record ordered at the same time are $8.00 each.

Saline County Clerk and Probate Records

The Saline County Clerk is at 215 North Main Street, Suite 9, Benton, AR 72015. Phone: (501) 303-5630. County Clerk Doug Curtis oversees the office. The Clerk maintains marriage licenses going back to 1836, probate records from 1836 to the present, voter registration, and land records from 1871 forward. The Clerk handles all marriage licenses and all probate cases for Saline County. This office does not issue death certificates, but its records are important secondary sources for death research.

Probate records are especially useful when a death certificate is restricted or when the death occurred before 1914. When someone in Saline County died and had an estate, an executor typically filed in probate court. Those case files include the date of death, name of the deceased, surviving heirs, and copies of any will. Marriage records from 1836 are among the oldest available in the county and can help establish family relationships needed to prove legal access to a restricted death certificate. Given that Saline County was established in 1835, these records span nearly the entire history of the county.

Note: Marriage records and land records are two of the best tools for confirming death dates when certificates are unavailable, since deeds often transfer near the time of death and marriage records show family structure.

Saline County Circuit Clerk and Online Records

The Saline County Circuit Clerk handles court records, land records, and property filings. The office is at the Saline County Courthouse, 200 North Main, Room 113, Benton, AR 72015. You can reach the Register of Deeds line at (501) 303-5607. Myka Bono Sample is the Circuit Clerk and Recorder. For general information, visit the circuit clerk page on the county website.

The Circuit Clerk offers two online search options. The first is AVA, a free public search that includes both image and data access. Printed images from AVA cost $0.25 per page plus a $1.00 credit card fee per transaction. The second option is LAREDO, a subscription service with 24-hour access and downloadable software designed for title searches and bulk records work. LAREDO is popular with legal and real estate professionals but is available to anyone who subscribes.

Court records held by the Circuit Clerk can include probate filings, divorce decrees, estate inventories, and land transfers. When a Saline County resident died and property changed hands, those deed transfers frequently show up in the Circuit Clerk's database within months of the death. This is a useful tool for confirming death dates when other records are not available.
